MICHAEL HUNT
** WILL ATTEND Meet & Greet on July 8

How long have you lived in Starkville/Oktibbeha County?
38 years

What qualifications and experience do you feel you possess that would benefit the office you are seeking?
I have 20 years of experience as Oktibbeha County’s Coroner/Medical Examiner.  I am a graduate of The University of Alabama’s program of Emergency Medicine.  I have been the Emergency Medical Services Director at OCH Regional Medical Center for 25 years. I have been trained in conjunction with the FBI, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, Mississippi Crime Lab, and local law enforcement.  I have 25 years of medical experience which is essential for this job.

What do you see as the most important aspects or considerations of the office you are seeking?
Medical experience.  I ran on this platform 20 years ago.  I promised to improve the Oktibbeha County Medical Examiner’s office by the utilization of medical knowledge and I feel that I have done so.  Being a coroner does not just consist of pronouncing someone’s death.  The coroner is responsible for determining the MANNER of death, which entails knowledge of disease processes.  The state of Mississippi has been criticized nationally for not having medical experience as a requirement to run for this office like many other states in the nation do.  Not getting the cause of death correct can cause many problems for families such as insurance denials, problems in criminal and civil trials, etc.  There are causes of death that are genetic in nature that surviving family members need to be aware of in order to get the proper care for themselves to prevent future problems.

In your view, what are the strengths and weaknesses of the Oktibbeha County/Starkville community?
Oktibbeha County and the city of Starkville is a very tight knit community with Christian values.  MSU is a major benefit for our community and all municipalities work well together.

What growth or improvements do you hope to see in Starkville/Oktibbeha County area in the next 5 years?
Would like to see more job creation, not just in academics but in the technical industry as well.
Where can constituents find more information about you and your campaign?
Starting July 1st I will have a facebook page for my campaign.

CHRIS POLLAN
** WILL ATTEND Meet & Greet on July 8

How long have you lived in Starkville/Oktibbeha County?
My wife, Trina, & I are both Mississippi State Alumni.  After finishing school, we moved away for approximately 18 months but were blessed and had the opportunity to return in 1997.  Trina returned to work with Mississippi State while an additional geographical area was added to my federal position.  We were really excited when our new house in Starkville was completed in 1999 so that we could start our family.

What qualifications and experience do you feel you possess that would benefit the office you are seeking?
I am seeking the office of Coroner.  Qualifications and experience that I possess which would benefit the people of Oktibbeha County include:

1) Only Licensed Funeral Director & Embalmer running for the office

2) Honor Graduate of Mortuary School

3) Honor Graduate of Mississippi State University

4) Passed both national board examinations on the first attempt administered by the International Conference of Funeral Service

5) 14 years of public service

6) 25+ years of investigative experience

7) Thousands of hours of classroom study and practical experience specifically devoted to the study of death, caring for the dead while serving the living

8) First-hand experience working with families during their worst time of need; natural deaths to accidents, homicide, suicide, cancer, diseases, etc.

9) Experience working with clergy, emergency responders, hospice workers, social workers, & other care givers

10) Member of First Baptist Church

As your Coroner I will offer care, character, compassion, education, experience, professionalism, and understanding.

What do you see as the most important aspects or considerations of the office you are seeking?
The most important aspects or considerations of the office in my opinion are:

  • Care
  • Character
  • Commitment
  • Compassion
  • Education
  • Experience
  • Professionalism
  • Understanding

In your view, what are the strengths and weaknesses of the Oktibbeha County/Starkville community?
Strengths are vast and there is simply no way to include them all.  We love Starkville and Oktibbeha County.  A quick list of some key strengths in my view include:

  1. Economic environment and population growth
  2. Starkville’s recognition as a Certified Retirement City
  3. Educational opportunities abound with Mississippi State University, East Mississippi Community College and MUW being in our back yards
  4. Churches, civic / community groups and organizations strategically working to improve both Starkville and Oktibbeha County
  5. Ongoing wellness and healthcare improvements

In regard to weaknesses, I think we should really make a conscientious effort to support our local community and businesses more.  In watching and talking with many people over the years, there appears to be a lot of business and money that goes outside of our community.  Keeping money local helps keep and increase jobs, allow local businesses to give back to the community, and allows for local investment while building local infrastructure, programs, etc.

What growth or improvements do you hope to see in Starkville/Oktibbeha County area in the next 5 years?
Growth or improvements that I hope to see in our area in the next 5 years would be to retain existing businesses, attract more businesses and expand our job market so that everyone that wants to work would have the opportunity or as we want to progress in our careers to higher paying opportunities that the community offers those type opportunities.

Where can constituents find more information about you and your campaign?
More information about me can be found on Facebook at Pollan for Coroner, our information cards, or by contacting me for a visit.
