The Starkville Separate School District
has over 4,000 students and averages 220 graduates each year. Nearly 77 percent of these graduates pursue higher degrees of education. It is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and has received the highest accreditation rating given by the Mississippi Commission on School Accreditation.

RECOGNITIONS & AWARDS
The Starkville School District is home to nationally recognized programs, students and teachers. Starkville High School was one of five schools recognized nationwide by the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts for its outstanding high school arts program; the Fine Arts department has been recognized twice on major network television.

Other previous recognitions include Sudduth Elementary as a National Blue Ribbon School; Overstreet as Best in the State by Redbook Magazine's Best School Competition; Starkville High School, Overstreet Elementary and Rosa Stewart Elementary Environmental Programs and the Starkville School District Extended Day Program for Excellence by the Mississippi Public Education Forum; and Starkville High School's Millsaps Career and Technology Center by the Southern Regional Educational Board.

TEACHERS
Almost half of the teachers in the Starkville School District hold advanced degrees, ten have received National Board Certification in their subject areas. In addition, Starkville teachers have been recognized by the MUW Hall of Master Teachers, the National Science Foundation's Presidential Scholars program, and various other state and national organizations. Starkville Schools have received Parent-of-the-Year Awards, Teacher of the Year Awards,and Administrator of the Year Awards for the Third Congressional District. Ms. Tina Scholtes was named Mississippi Teacher of the Year for 1998-99.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
Environmental education is a focal point of Starkville Schools, evidenced in its unique partnership with the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the 48,000-acre Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge. The Noxubee Conservation Centers offer Starkville school students an opportunity to combine wildlife and natural beauty with education. A multipurpose building, nature trails, and wildlife-viewing overlooks showcase the Center's activities.

ACADEMICS
The excellence of Starkville Schools is evidenced in academics. There have been approximately 120 National Merit Scholars in the past 16 years. Members of the 1999 graduation class were offered over $1.6 million in college scholarships. Average ACT scores for graduating seniors are consistently above the state and national averages.

ATHLETICS & EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Starkville sports and extracurricular activities continue the District's commitment to excellence. Starkville High School's band hold the state record for All Superior Honors with 43 consecutive years. Starkville football teams have won back-to-back state championships and the cross-country team and the girl's track teams have won State Championships in recent years. Both boys' and girls' basketball teams have advanced to State Tournament play. The Starkville High School Drama Department and the Show Choir have won state-level competitions and competed at the national level. Armstrong's Show Choir has performed at Walt Disney World on two occasions.
